What’s a good diet routine to match my fitness routine?
I just got a gym membership and I’m trying to get in shape. I’m doing aerobic exercises and circuit training. I’m trying to loose some belly flab, bulk up, and gain stamina.
My question is, when should I eat what, and how should I balance my exercises?
Do I start with high protein breakfast AND have a protein shake after working out? Should I have cereals instead in the morning? What if I work out in the afternoon, what should I eat, and how long before I work out? Is it ok to do aerobic and weight training in the same day? What’s a good work out schedule? (I can go everyday if I have to)

Best way to become a personal trainer. I need advice?
I’m seriously considering becoming a personal trainer. I have been involved in sports my whole life and have always had an interest in training other people to get in better shape, etc.
I graduated college with a degree in business (plan on opening my own kickboxing studio) so all the knowledge I have with fitness is from my father (ex weight lifter) and reading tons of articles.
So here is my dilemma. I can either take an online course to get my CPT, or I can go to a local tech school to get a hands on experience. What would be a better way of getting my certification? Would local gyms rather see hands on experience, or do they just need to see that you have your certification?
I went to college for this. I have an associates degree in Fitness and Exercise, along with personal trainer and group fitness instructor certifications through the college. Unfortunately most places in the Chicago area, especially the chain fitness centers seem to like national certifications over a college education. In fact I was told by Life Time fitness that I wasn’t certified.
Once I got my ACE certification, I was hired by places. Its unfortunate, because I thought the classes I took in school were excellent and I learned a lot in them. I find it amazing that these places value a certification that you get online or at a weekend seminar over a college degree.
Make sure this is what you really want to do. I love the part where I work with people, and actually train them. Unfortunately that is a very small part of the job. The job is more of a sales job, and I have a hard time trying to work people into giving me their hard earned money, specially in this economy. The only way to be truly successful is to work for yourself, which requires a lot of hard work

Getting my personal training certification…?
I just have a few questions for the experienced personal trainers…
I plan on opening up my own kickboxing studio because I have been involved in Martial Arts since I was 5 and would love to teach others about it as well as give them the best workout.
I know quite a bit about fitness due to reading tons of articles and magazines but I graduated with a business degree, so I’ve never had proper education when it comes to fitness.
I want to get my personal training certificate so I can work at some local gyms and such before I venture off into the small business world. Ive looked into ISSA, NASM as well as AFAA (to get licensed to teach classes).
Where do you suggest I start? Is it important to have more than one certification? And I guess my last question would be how much do you love your job as a personal trainer?
Hi, I passed my exam for AFAA this spring so I could work as an asst. trainer over the summer break. (Arobics classes mostly). I can’t be a full (lead) trainer til im at least 18. Ive been at my gym for a while, so they know me. Im not sure other gyms would allow me to work though, even though i have the paper. I think it’s an insurance thing mostly.
Anyways, The test inst too hard if you studied or know most of the basics. For me the hard part was anatomy and kinesiology and risk assessment.
Our head coach / head trainer says “certified doesnt mean qualified”. Experience and following the rules is what gyms look at first. In gymnastics for example, you only need to pass a 25 question “saftey” test to be certified. Kind of a ‘what not to do so you don’t get sued test’.
I did the workshop and got the study guide.
One other thing: Learning about machines sucked. I do only bodyweight training, so all the fitness machine saftey stuff was new to me. (squeeked by on that part)
