personal fitness training degrees
Becoming a Personal Trainer?

I’m in my 2nd year of doing my undergrad in chemistry and just recently I have finally discovered what I have passion for and what I want to do for a career. I really want to become a personal trainer since I really enjoy working out and I have a personal trainer. Do you think that I could still become a personal trainer if I get certified? Even though I have a degree in chemistry which isn’t related to fitness?
I’m planning on completing my 3 year science degree and then becoming a full-time trainer. Since I want to start working asap, I’m planning on doing part-time training next year.
What do you think of my plan for personal training and such?
Thanks for your help!

I would suggest you continue into clinical nutrition after your chemistry degree and get certified as a personal trainer on the side. You don’t need college education to become a personal trainer, and there are so many personal trainers who are somewhat clueless on nutrition. That way you can offer a real service that at least I would be interested in.

fitness training studio
What is a fair percentage to charge personal trainers to use a fitness center?

I am the owner of a personal training studio in Houston, TX. I want to open up my facility to quality personal trainers and I need to know what would be a fair split. If anyone out there has any experience in this matter please pass on your input.

The biggest factor is whether they are bringing in “new” clients to your gym. If they are increasing your “membership” revenue, you should decrease the % of training fees to 5-20%.

I have seen gyms where a new trainer comes in, brings 20-30 new clients, the clients pay the “gym membership fee” and the trainers hourly. The gym owner get’s greedy, resulting in the trainer leaving, and the 20-30 clients with them.

This seems to be an ongoing problem around the country. The gym owner needs to focus on the fact that co-existence is mutually beneficial.

Can Exercise Help Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease?

Without a doubt, an Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis is perhaps the most frightening prognosis that can be received. Debilitating at best, Alzheimer’s symptoms are so serious that most people with advanced stage Alzheimer’s require full-time care.

Approximately 4.5 million people in the United States currently have Alzheimer’s, a number that is expected to climb as high as 16 million by 2050 as the baby boom generation ages. The risk of contracting Alzheimer’s disease rises as we age, affecting 10 percent of people older than age 65 and 50 percent of individuals over age 85.

Although much progress has been made in the fields of Alzheimer’s medication, Alzheimer’s care and even Alzheimer’s treatment, researchers have thus far been unable to pin down the elusive Alzheimer’s cure.

The Alzheimer’s Association speaks of two Alzheimer’s research goals:
1. To prevent onset of the disease in those who are at risk but not yet afflicted;
2. To treat and delay progression of the disease in those who already have the symptoms.

While Alzheimer’s disease treatment is surely an admirable goal, and one that we all need to support, focusing on Alzheimer’s prevention may yield more immediate results.

Alzheimer’s disease prevention tips provided by the Alzheimer’s Assoc include staying mentally active, being socially involved and adopting a brain-healthy diet (a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet full of vegetables). Recent Alzheimer’s disease research has also discovered a link between regular exercise and a decreased risk of contracting the illness.

“A study in Finland of 1,500 elderly people found that those who were obese in middle age were twice as likely to develop dementia when they got old as those who were of normal weight. For those who also had high cholesterol and high blood pressure in middle age, the risk of dementia was six times higher than those who were not affected” (source: Philadelphia (Reuters); Mon Jul 19, 3:42 PM ET; by Jon Hurdle).

Professor of neuroscience and psychiatry and at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Joseph T. Coyle states that regular mental and physical activity may help to improve the chances of Alzheimer’s prevention: “Crossword puzzles are not bad for you, and they may actually help prevent the onset of dementia. So I would say get regular exercise…..and find a hobby that you enjoy that’s intellectually challenging”.

Yet another expert to weigh in on the Alzheimer’s exercise link is Dr. Lawrence Whalley with the School of Medicine at Scotland’s University of Aberdeen. “Basically, whatever’s good for your heart is good for your head. Mortality of vascular disease in the United States was halved between 1965 and 1995, and this is one of the great public-health successes of the 20th century. And what people are looking for in dementia prevention is the same, because the factors that everyone knows predispose to heart disease also predispose to dementia”.

If regular exercise can indeed help to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, then how much exercise is needed? Less than you might think. Researchers from Sweden found that “…..those who, in their middle years, exercised during their free time at least twice a week were 60 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease compared to sedentary men and women who exercised less than twice a week. The active individuals were also 50 percent less likely to develop other forms of dementia and memory loss” (source: alzinfo.org).

What the public needs to realize, however, is that just any old workout won’t necessarily deliver the Alzheimer’s preventing power they seek. In the Sweden study, for example, exercise was defined as physical activity lasting at least 20 to 30 minutes and intense enough to cause breathlessness and sweating. That’s a far cry from the lightweight, low impact and effortless ‘exercise’ embraced by many weekend workout buffs.

The bottom line is that, while scientists still haven’t identified an Alzheimer’s cause or cure, the amount of Alzheimer’s information we have available has given us some useful tools to help us prevent this dreaded disease. One such resource is regular exercise, which has been proven to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in the majority of people.

While there is certainly no guarantee that consistent exercise, or any other treatment for that matter, will provide full Alzheimer’s protection, it can be stated with certainty that those people who regularly engage in strenuous exercise will lower their risk of Alzheimer’s. This fact, added to all the other myriad benefits of regular exercise, makes a strong case for joining a health club, gym or fitness center today.

Any Possible Chance of Getting Into USC?

I am just ending Junior in high school. My GPA is low… a 3.0 unweighted, but I am planning on retaking a few classes online before I file my App. It should bring me up to about a 3.3 or a 3.4. I have many honors and AP classes under my belt and I am planning on taking them again my Senior Year. I am in the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) Club at my school and I have many hours of volunteer work. I have just been Nationally Certified as a Phlebotomist through a prestigeous Allied Health Program at my school. I’ve also held down a part-time job for the past two years. Oh.. and before I forget my SAT scores are a 2164. I know that I probably do not stand out as much compared to more accomplished students but I have heard that anyone will be accepted as long as they don’t ask for fianacial aid. Is there any truth to this rumor? Under any of these circumstances… do I have any chance?

You should definitely talk to your counselor! They should have, or be able to get, all of the answers you need. State Universities are reasonably easy to get into with good grades even if you DO need financial aid. Merit awards and GRANTS (not loans) are the best ways to get the finances you may need and your couselor should be able to help you with that, too. Good luck!!

group exercise class workouts
How much would you pay for this workout/fitness class or how much do you think it is worth?

How much would you pay for this workout/fitness class or how much do you think it is worth?
Fitness group class, 3 times a week, 1 hour hybrid class of resistance training, cardio and stretching?
How much would you pay for a unique hybrid class that is done in groups of 10 on 10 identical fully equipped stations. Each class would include planned
1. strength/resistance training working major muscle groups each class with various exciting exercises
2. high intense cardio before and after workout and in between some sets (running, jumps, burpees, cycling, boxing, kickboxing)
3. stretching
Each class would be challanging but resistance could be changed based on and set according to fitness level/condition of member.
Everybody would be entitled to work out three times a week for an hour in a fixed schedule.
So when signing up people have to choose the time slots they will work out. That will guarantee them a station for those workouts.

Find a fitness club with a low monthly fee (no more than $20) and no contract. When you get tired of it, you won’t have to pay any further. This routine you’re asking about with a personal trainer can cost around $50 a week, if not more….

personal fitness training certificates
To Whom Do I Report A Fitness Training Facility That is Operating Without Certificates?

I recently learned that the owner of a fitness training facility is training kids without the proper license and certificates. There are some states that do not require personal trainers to obtain one, but it is a must in this particular state. Who do I report this to? Thanks in advance.

The Better Business Bureau, your state department of labor, and/or your local district attorney’s office.
