Warming up before exercising is a must. You need to increase your body temperature and warm-up your muscles. Why? Well we all know what happens to a cold rubber band when you try to stretch it. Also, at a relaxed state, most of your blood is within your internal organs, not your muscles. Warming up through physical activity will increase your heart rate, body temperature, and flow of blood to your muscles.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends that warm-ups should take about five to ten minutes. In my experience, the older (or colder) you are, the longer you need to thoroughly warm up. It’s pretty much based on your intensity level.

My warm-ups consist of mainly riding the elliptical cross trainer because it is low-impact and works both my upper and lower body. But this can get boring especially if you want to hit the weight room right away.

Recently I discovered a way to warm-up the whole body while using a modified hybrid workout routine. What’s a hybrid routine? Well if hybrid cars use a mixture of energy sources, hybrid workouts use a mixture of exercises. For example, you can take a pair of dumbbells and curl them up, and at the top of contraction you can flow right into a shoulder press. This is an example of a biceps curl and shoulder press hybrid workout.

Warm-Up Routine

For warming up the whole body, try this out. All you need is a pair of dumbbells that you can curl comfortable for up to 10 times (20 would be too light of a weight). For me, this ends up being 30-35 lbs, depending on what day it is. Next, find a spot on the floor that gives you plenty of room for a push-up position. Here’s the routine:

  • Squats
  • Push-ups (still holding dumbbells)
  • Shoulder presses
  • Bicep curls
  • Upright rows
  • Repeat

You can modify this list any way you want, but in my experience, this is a great full-body warm-up. I typically start out doing 10 reps of everything until I get fatigued (with push-ups, shoulder presses, or curls). As I fatigue, I decrease the reps to 6, 4, and even down to 1. The key is to go from one exercise to the other without pause, sort of like what you imagine in a military boot camp.

Once you complete this exercise (when you can’t go on any more than 1 rep) and you are not yet fully warmed up yet, take a minute or two break, grab a lighter pair of dumbbells and go at it again. I warm you, though, that if you do this warm-up properly, you will be breathing hard and heavy because you are taxing your whole body. To speed things up, do more squats and push-ups as these require major muscle systems and heavy weight (body weight).

Next time you’re stuck with a boring cardiovascular warm-up, head over to the weight room and get your pump on!

Beginner Cheerleader in College– help please?

I’m a sophomore in college in New York City and I recently joined the first ever cheer squad at my school. There weren’t any try-outs and we just needed dance experience, which I have through dancing in Winterguard (but that was like 6 years ago).
At least half of the girls don’t have cheer experience and just have dance experience, so I’m not the only one, but I’m worried.
I’m very in shape and fit (I know endurance won’t be an issue), but I can’t do any tumbling. I have super strong legs but my arms are toothpicks.
We haven’t started practicing yet, and I don’t know if I’ll be a flyer or a base or anything, but I really want to do the best I can.
Unfortunately I’m really broke and I can’t afford any tumbling classes at a gym.
I really just want to know where to start– with flexibility, strength training, or do I jump right into tumbling. ANY advice would be appreciated, and helpful DVDs, websites, books, or specific exercise routines I should do are welcome.

Well i used to be a champion gymnast when i was 12

start of with streches and lodes of conditioning and build up your arm muscel doin weights is good bring up for 10 counts and then down for 5

Make sure you really strech your back and shoulders cuz they are most important in tumbling

If you go on the internet u shud find daily conditioning you can do
and then youtube do quite good videos of people teaching tumbling step by step

hope that helps a little

sorry my spelling is terrible
thats what doing to much gym instead of school does

CALLING ALL ANOREXICS!! Can you guys help my with my health class project on eating disorders?

For health, we have to interview people with eating disorders. I chose anorexia. Please fill out my questionnaire and thank you for helping me with my homework!

THANKS AGAIN!!

Age?
How long have you had anorexia?
What do you typically eat in a day?
How long have you been anorexic?
How much weight have you lost and how long did it take you?
Do you exercise and if so, how long and what kind of exercise?
Do you ever binge?

14, but 10-13 when disordered

4 yrs.
400-500 cals.
when i was 10 and 11 it was severe. at 4’9′, i was 58-62 pounds and it took not that long. i was small to begin with. at 12 and 13, i was up around 65-70 at 4’10. i thought i was huge and as a cheerleader and flyer who wanted to be light, i would physically hurt myself for gaining weight. this year, i gained so much from bulimia and binge, which is caused by anorexia mostly:(. i am 4 ft 11 and 88 pounds:( i am trying to lose 9 pounds and am sadly going back to anorexia. i hate seeing myself fat in the mirror and it comforts me. i don’t want to do this so i am trying to keep reading my Bible and relying on God and Jesus, but i can feel myself slipping.
yes, i am actually starting a vigorous exercize program now. its the one i used during severe anorexia at 10 and 11. this is eating and burning ALL cals off through the elliptical. its hard to hide anorexia, but exercize makes it look like your trying to get strong when you’re really losing weight.
it is a love hate relationship here. i wish i could hate it, but i can’t. i hope that after i lose 9 pounds this summer i can stop. but i have a feeling i will always be haunted by anorexia:(

Exercise TV disappearing from our screens
Let’s all have a good stretch now and reminisce about the golden era of exercise TV. It was the ’80s, and bouncing women in neon leotards were never more than a few channels away.  Remember how we would drop the newfangled term “aerobicise” in conversation? And how we thought Olivia Newton-John’s hit “Physical” was about working out? Now, like leg rainbow warmers, exercise shows have gone out of …

exercise class oakland
I have a Bachelors in Psychology, If i get accepted, would getting a Masters degree in Exercise be valuable?

Exercise Science is my passion, I love to study it and would love to work in the field. I have a Degree in Psychology…I may get accepted into a masters program for exercise science, because I have enough pre req classes, but i have some questions.

1) do you think a masters program in exercise science from Oakland U, would be too intense for someone who studied the psychology cirriculum.
2) Could i get a job, if I have a masters in Exercise Science, but a bachelors in Psychology. or would that hold me back? My bachelors is from major university.

What do you want to do with a masters in exercise. REsearch. There are not many jobs for people with masters in exercise science. Many people with BS in ES go on to PT or OT school.

If you want to be a personal trainer, you do not even need a BS degree.
